Climatologists are worried that Venice is gradually sinking due to the rise of sea level. With the rise of sea level the lagoon city experiences heavy rainfall and floods. Between 1999 and 2002 it experienced massive problems due to floods.

Though floods are not new in Venice, to save the city operation Rialto is proposed. This project undertakes to raise each building by 3feet at the rate of 8 cms a day.

No doubt this is a costly venture, but the advocates propose that this would help the city retain its original look. Earlier it was discussed that Operation Mose be undertaken in which scores of dikes be planted at the entrance points to the lagoon (Venice is called a lagoon city).

Operation Rialto sounds interesting but may prove to be very costly. It is said that to raise every square metre it would cost a sum of 2500 euros (3800 dolars).

Let’s see what happens finally.
